From The Lines Desk…
Who do you Love?… December 11, 2002

While at my favorite sports emporium to watch the games last week I was again listening to some of the local chatter.  After selecting my usual seat for optimal viewing of the TV’s I started to digest what they were saying.

Patron 1:  I love the 49ers today.

Patron 2:  Really, why?

Patron 1:  49ers are an only a 4.5 point favorite going into Dallas!  The 49ers love beating Dallas in Dallas.  It’s like taking money from a baby!

Well we all now the result it was a San Fran by 4, 31-27.  They won the war but that doesn’t mean you win the prize.  Unfortunately our same friend also thought that there was no way in the world that Jacksonville would let Cleveland keep within 2.5 at home.  No WAY!  Cleveland 21, Jacksonville 20.

Unfortunately our friend was going with his heart rather than the cold hard numbers.  If Patron 1 had taken a few minutes out of his day to visit LasVegasSportsLine.com, he would have seen that while Dallas was a shabby 5-6-1 against the spread, San Fran was a pitiful 4-6-2.  At 9-4 you would hope that the 49ers would give you a little more bang for your buck but not so.

And how about those Jaguars and Browns.  While the Jaguars were a mediocre 6-6 the Browns were a better bet at 8-4 against the spread, good enough for 4th in the NFL.

Sometimes our hearts may mislead us into betting against what the numbers say.  If you were to look at Kansas City at 6-6 going into the week, but 8-3-1 against the spread, playing the Rams who were 2-10 against the spread going into the weekend, logic would tell you to bet the house on the Chiefs.  You would now have a new house as the Chiefs more than covered the 3.5 by winning 49-10.

That’s great but what does that mean for this week?

Well again looking into the crystal ball at LasVegasSportsLine you can check the ATS numbers.

The Colts go to Cleveland this week, and Indy is 24th in the league against the spread at 5-8, while the Browns are 4th in the league at 9-4.

Detroit will host Tampa Bay who are 2nd in the league at 9-4 ATS and the Lions are 26th at 5-8.

Kansas City is number one in ATS standings at 9-3-1 and will be in Denver to face the number 23 ATS standings Broncos at 5-7-1.

And finally number 7 Oakland is in number 8 Miami.  Both are 8-5.  Hey not all of this is easy.

I can’t tell you who to love I can only show you the way.

Good luck everyone,

Nick Rizzo
