Probably Starts vs. the Money Line…June 11, 2003
By Nick Rizzo

Hopefully everyone is having a profitable spring so far.  With summer just around the corner and the NBA a few days away from calling it a season we turn our lonely eyes to baseball. My May 7 article, how to win in MLB, I had mentioned some things to look for to help find value in the games we pick.  Well let’s put this to the test.

One of the things I had talked about bet on pitching.  Below is a list of games that I have selected from this weekends probably pitchers.  I have included the season records, their last three appearances, as well as their Money Line records.  Going strictly on the Money Line lets see how we do. More

128 Preakness PreviewJune 5, 2003
This Saturday at the 135th Belmont Stakes Funny Cide will attempt to become the first horse in 25 years to win horse racing’s Triple Crown.  Since Affirmed turned back Alydar in the 1978 Belmont to become the 11th Triple Crown winner, eight other horses have tried and failed to capture racing's most elusive prize after winning the first two races, the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. More
128 Preakness PreviewMay 14, 2003
Funny Cide, the 12-1 winner of the Kentucky Derby will be looking to take the second leg of the Triple Crown this Saturday at the 128 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course.  Funny Cide will be on the outside looking in, literally, when he starts from post 9.   Jack Knowlton, who heads the Sackatoga Stable syndicate which owns Funny Cide, admitted an outside post was "not what you'd wish for." Baseball is known as America’s past time.  Baseball is extremely popular amongst fantasy players, but baseball doesn’t enjoy the gambling popularity that say, football does.  Those that do bet on baseball find that it can be very profitable if done properly.  One thing that both fantasy gamers and gamblers appreciate about baseball is its predictability. It’s a wonder, then, that more fantasy league players don't bet baseball. More
129th Kentucky Derby Part 3… April 23, 2003
I usually reserve Derby picks for Derby Day.  If I were to have written this article yesterday I would have had Empire Maker as the clear favorite.  However, now that Empire Maker has a bruised foot that should make it interesting for the rest of the field.  Here is a look at some horses that can be your ticket to the pay window. More.
129th Kentucky Derby Part 2… April 23, 2003
With less than two weeks to the race, it is crunch time at Churchill Downs for horses training for the Kentucky Derby.   Last spring, Proud Citizen stood out on a daily basis in the mornings leading up to the Derby, then went out to finish second behind War Emblem at odds of 23-1. Harlan's Holiday, on the other hand, turned in a disappointing work five days before the race, and finished a non-threatening sixth as the Derby favorite.  Here is how the field appears to be shaping up.  More.
129th Kentucky Derby Part 1… April 16, 2003
With the Kentucky Derby just a little over two weeks away it’s never too early to see how some of the early favorites are racing.  Like any good handicapper, we like to keep an eye on the performance of the participants prior to the big day.  Below are some of the early returns on a few of the contenders. More.
MLB Promos… April 9, 2003
Betting is all about winning.  Unfortunately betting is all about losing too.  A few of the things that I consistently try to convey in these articles is only bet those games that you find value in, and I also try to pass on techniques to help find where the values are.  It’s like the old saying, “you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink.” More.
NBA Back to Back ATS… April 2, 2003
Most of us have heard the statement that NBA teams playing in the second game of a back to back set have a tougher time winning. As I showed in the article from March 10th, this really isn't true. The fact is that NBA teams don't play significantly worse in the second game of back to back games. Now the question of how to the do Against the Spread in these games? Does the prevailing thought that they do play worse during these games affect the line of those games? More.
March Mayhem… March 26, 2003
Once again the NCAA tournament has proven to be one of sports best events, second to only the Superbowl.  The top teams have played well with Kentucky owning every team they play and Arizona seeing a scare but winning when they had to. More.
Dressed to the Nines… March 17, 2003
What is it about the number 9 that makes Companies (SportsBooks) believe it is such a mind altering number?  Why is it when you walk into your local Lexus Dealer and the sticker price is $39,999., but not $40,000?   Or when you are food shopping at your local super market and you pick up a gallon of milk and the price is $3.99, but not $4.00.   Is it our love for Abraham Lincoln and the copper penny?  I think not.   Why does this happen?  Well, we all know that the reason is similar to that of a David Copperfield, ILLUSION!  The Companies (SportsBooks)  in question thinks the consumers (gamblers) are dumb enough to think they are getting a deal.  Let me give you a few examples. More.
Back to Back… March 10, 2003
While watching NBA basketball over the weekend I couldn’t help but notice a stat that was thrown up on the TV.  It was how well this particular team played in the second game of back to back games.  This is usually a piece of criteria that handicappers use to help set the lines.  Over all the statistics prove to be correct, but are slightly misleading. More.
Boys of Summer… February 19, 2003
I will say it right now; I am a Red Sox fan.  As my divine right of being a Red Sox fan I have earned the right to be able to say, “I hate the New York Yankees.”  There I said it and I don’t care who knows, but love ‘em or hate ‘em, the Yankees do one thing, and that’s win.  I hate that. More.
Good Bye Mr. Spaulding… February 19, 2003
The regular season doesn’t start for another 6 weeks but SportingBetUSA already has the odds posted for this year’s homerun champion.More.
Roy saves but Rizzo scores on the rebound… February 12, 2003
There is a myth when gambling that you can’t make money betting on the NHL, so people tend to shy away from doing so.  Much like anything when gambling if you have the right information then you are able to make informed decisions.  While nothing is a sure thing in gambling, these informed decisions can hopefully have you picking the winner better than 53% of the time.More.
What does your Daddy do?… February 5, 2003
Think for a moment that I was, god forbid, ever allowed to procreate.  The psychological damage that I would inflict upon a poor unsuspecting child would be criminal.  Not that I would knowingly be a bad father, I just don’t live my life as a normal parent would or could.  I cannot even fathom what the poor youngster would say on parent’s day. More.
What have we been missing?… January 29, 2003
After emerging from my 5 month hiatus that is known as football, I’ve found that many things have changed.  This is not the same world it was back on September 5, when the Niners edged the Giants by a field goal with: 06 seconds left to open the NFL season.  The world seems different now, it seems ….smaller.More.
Super Bowl Preview… January 22, 2003
The Oakland Raiders are…well the Oakland Raiders.  They’ve always had a smorgasbord of characters, from owner Al ‘Just Win Baby’ Davis, to Lyle Alzado, from huggable coach John Madden to thugs like Jack Tatum.  The Raiders for sure have never been short on people to talk about.
Rough Draft… Jan 22, 2003
Last Monday morning while eating my second coffee roll before 10 am I…Last Monday morning while in the middle of my 8 mile jog, I was reflecting on some moments from the weekends NFL playoff games.  What another wild weekend in the NFL.More.
The ramblings of an inert madman … Jan 9, 2003
Momma don’t let your baby grow up to be a Cowboy….unless Bill Parcels is their head coach.  The current over/under on the ‘Boys next season is at 8.5.  As much as I think Parcels is a great coach the schedule is pretty tough.  Aside from playing their regular NFC East schedule the Giants, the Eagles, and the ‘Skins twice, they will also have Atlanta, Buffalo, and Miami at home and must go on the road to New Orleans, Tampa Bay, New England, and the Jets.  The Cowboys are pretty solid on defense which will keep them in a lot of games but you still have to be able to score points.  Take the Under.More.
Welcome to the Tournament … January  2, 2003
Well ladies and gentlemen, ‘Welcome to the Tournament’.  Just when you didn’t think you would know what to do with yourself now that bowl season is ending, the NFL kicks off its annual tournament, also known as the NFL Playoffs.  Instead of the normal ramblings usually found in this space, today you will be delighted to know that we will be dealing only with the facts.More.
Tis the Season … December 26, 2002
With the NFl playoffs only a little more than a week away and the College Bowl season in full swing, this is the time of year when people who normally may not wager might be tempted to lay a few bucks down on the games.  Some people write articles like this usually at the beginning of the season, I think these articles are more beneficial coming into this time of year.  Well lets see if we can't give you some new wrinkles to play.  More
Tis the Season … December 18, 2002
After  waiting all year it is finally here.  Since the beginning of December I have been counting down the days.  I've made my lists, I've checked them twice, I've looked to see who's been hitting the overs and who's been covering the spreads.  Finally, it's starting to look a lot like the College Bowl Season.  More
Who do you Love … December 11, 2002
While at my favorite sports emporium to watch the games last week I was again listening to some of the local chatter.  After selecting my usual seat for optimal viewing of the TV's I started to digest what they were saying. More
Living Large in the Wild Wild West… December 5, 2002
For the moment, the wild, wild AFC West belongs to LaDainian Tomlinson and the Chargers. Tomlinson rushed for a franchise-record 220 yards and three touchdowns, and Steve Christie's 27-yard field goal with 3:01 left in overtime gave the Chargers a come from behind 30-27 win over the Broncos on Sunday.More
Systems Return For Your Gambling Perusal … November 20th, 2002
Let’s get something straight- bad teams cover football games. Pity the gambler who week after week just plays the lumber. With that said, let me tell show you some systems plays based on trends that all point to the inferior side making the money this weekend. More
Football against the numbers … November 13th, 2002
NFL: (overall NFL regular season systems at 62% "side" winners)

90% or Better (these went 7-1 ATS last yr (2001) in the regular season)
(pre-season 3-1-1 in 2002)
(regular season 0-2
) More
Its a numbers game … November 6th, 2002
The rarely stagnant accounting balance sheet that is the NFL gambling line will each week reveal a few "You could knock me over with a feather" numbers. As in "You could knock me over with a feather if you told me a month ago that the Jets would be laying 2/5 to Miami in the Jersey swamps.” But hey with a banged up school of fish flying north, the number makes some sense. More
Nothing wrong with a good deal … October 30th, 2002
The idea is universal: We all want to buy low and sell high. It’s what makes stock traders salivate, and it drives investors as well as those who own a business. Heck, it even pushes the fans of E-Bay and wine collectors too. Everyone wants to get a deal on the front end and then again on the back end. More
With apologies to Johnny Cash, I Walk The Line… October 23rd, 2002
Sitting at the local sports bar, spinning my head to catch all the NFL action on the multiple screens, I overheard two patrons engage in point spread patter. But rather than focusing their numbers talk on the upcoming Monday Night game, these two punters were already thinking about next Sunday. More
Opposites Attract… October 16th, 2002
Gambling, with all its veneer, risk, glamour, luster or whatever else you may call it is in reality little more than an opinion. Your opinion vs. the opinion of the odds maker and as the line gets tweaked by the public; you can throw them into the opinion stew. More
The Chase or Let's Take a Ride Into a One Lane Tunnel...October 9, 2002
Whether you’re a seasoned, grizzled gambling veteran or a new kid on the block trying to make a few bucks for a case of Natural Light, the insidious thing that one time (actually many times) grabs all gamblers is the chase. Sometimes called tunnel vision, no matter what you call it, the chase is just that- you’re hot after a team because you’re too close to the situation. Maybe you feel they will win or as it is in most cases, you simply think they owe you one. More
Total Me Up… October 2nd, 2002
Old-timers like yours truly actually remember when the total, aka over-under was born.  It was back in 1973 and it was added to the Monday Night game as a way to draw more action when there was only one game on the big board. More
Bet Early and Often… September 25th, 2002
Each week, I begin my Monday by looking at the opening numbers.  Then while I work on my second cup of coffee I work on the numbers. More
Show me the Money Line… September 18th, 2002
While analyzing last weeks NFL results, I found that the NFL underdogs went 11-4 ATS** on Sunday. More
